GlobalProtect Update Process

Overview

The GlobalProtect VPN client is capable of auto-updating itself when a new version of the client has been published by IT.  This document provides a review of the process.

The GlobalProtect client update process begins when IT publishes an updated version of the GlobalProtect application.  Each time the user connects, the application checks to see if its version matches that of the client published on the system.  If the system contains a newer version, the GlobalProtect client will prompt the user asking if they would like to auto-update their installed client version.

Definitions

GlobalProtect:  Application/system that is used to remotely connect to the COG internal networks.

VPN (Virtual Private Network): An encrypted connection typically over the Internet from a device to a network.

Instructions

NOTE:  The images below may be different depending on the released version.

  1. After the IT Department updates the GlobalProtect system,  that new version will become available to the end users.
  2. When the user connects to the client after installation of the new version, they will be prompted with a similar message stating a newer version of GlobalProtect is available for download.  After clicking on "Yes" it will start dowloading immediately. If you click "No" you will be prompted every time you connect. It is advisable to update as soon as possible as newer versions contain security patches, performance and feature updates.

  5. During the installation, the connection will be terminated and re established
  6. The new version will remember the settings from the previous version.  Once the install is complete, the user can reconnect using GlobalProtect as usual.

You may receive a warning message during the upgrade. The installer will report that "The following applications are using files which the installer must update."
In this case, you can try two things:

  • Disconnect from the VPN manually and choose Try Again
  • Choose Continue and reboot your PC after the install is complete.
